Thank You for Making “Abraham Lincoln” a Success!

By Jess • August 27, 2011 • NewsComment

The board, staff, and volunteers at Andrew County Museum want to thank the people of Andrew County for helping us make “Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Times, A Man for All Times” a success during its stop at Andrew County Museum. We enjoyed seeing many new faces and plenty of long-time friends during the three weeks the exhibit was open. We know the word was getting around the county that this exhibit was worth rearranging your schedule to see!

We hope you’ll also make time to visit us throughout the year and mark your calendars now for the Winter Event on December 3, 2011 and “The Way We Worked,” an exhibit presented by the Smithsonian Institution and the Missouri Humanities Council, between May 5 and June 2, 2012!

The Savannah Reporter: Museum Hosts Special Exhibit

By Jess • August 12, 2011 • Press ReleasesComment

On August 10, 2011, Jesse Murphy of the Savannah Reporter wrote about his recent visit to Andrew County Museum and all of the exciting programs we have going on in conjunction with our temporary exhibit Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Times, A Man for All Times:

The Andrew County Museum is the temporary home of a traveling Abraham Lincoln exhibit.

The 24 panels show Lincoln’s life, accomplishments, and legacy, as well as his influences on our society.

It is on loan from the Gilder Lechman Institute of American History and will be here until August 20.

This Saturday, Glenn Uminowicz, Director of the Andrew County Museum, will give a presentation with the exhibit on August 13.

His talk will include little known facts about Lincoln, including that he appointed many political rivals to his cabinet, and that the Emancipation Proclamation was not solely Lincoln’s idea.

Admission will be free the day of Uminowicz’s presentation, which is titled “Two Telling Stories: Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglas and the Civil War.”

Uminowicz said that exhibits like this are a big attraction, and since they have had it the museum has seen higher traffic.

“It’s like a cherry on top for a lot of people,” Uminowicz said. “The ones who haven’t been here in a long time come for the new things and are surprised at everything else they see.”

Along with the exhibit came teacher kits which the museum plans to give to schools in Andrew County for their libraries.

The kits include a DVD, CD’s, instructional booklets, activity ideas and much more.

The kits are in correlation with the museum’s new “traveling trunk” program. The trunks include many resources for teachers and are available on request.

The cost is free to all Andrew County schools, who also have priority if scheduling conflicts arise.

A trunk on local orchards is completed, and Uminowicz said that the trunk about the Civil War is near completion and will be ready before school starts.

On August 20th, museum curator Jess Rezac will host a “Family Fun Day.” It will be inspired by the life of Lincoln. Youngsters ages six to 11 can engage in activities such as making a paper stovepipe hat or a “Penny Pendant,” using a Lincoln-head penny and red, white and blue craft materials.

The Andrew County Museum is located at 202 East Duncan Drive in Savannah. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10AM to 4PM. Admission is $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for seniors and students, and youngsters ages 13 and under are free. For more information, call (816) 324-4720.

Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Time, A Man for All Times, a national traveling exhibition that examines Lincoln’s life, accomplishments, and legacy opens at the Andrew County Museum on August 2nd through August 20th. Organized by the Gilder LehrmanInstitute of American History, this exhibition goes beyond images of Lincoln to focus on the evolution of his beliefs and his impact on the nation. St. Joseph News-Press: Savannah man uncovers Civil War history

By Jess • June 17, 2011 • PressComment

On June 17, 2011, Andrew County Museum was featured in aSt. Joseph News-Press article about Jeff Eseley’s discovery of an article about a civil war scrimmage in Savannah. This story is just one of several exciting stories we’ve discovered while our education committee investigates the civil war in Andrew County.

News of the battle was a surprise and good news to the Andrew County Museum.

Museum staff and the education committee are developing two traveling trunk programs to bring Andrew County Civil War stories to school kids this fall, said Glenn Uminowicz, the museum director. So news of a battle was exciting, he added.

The education committee has gone trolling through the museum collections. It even found letters by Civil War veterans, talking about their service, said Jess Rezac, curator.

The museum also plans to have a national traveling exhibition, “Abraham Lincoln: A Man of His Time, A Man for All Times.” The exhibit examines Mr. Lincoln’s life, accomplishments and legacy. It will be at the Andrew County Museum Aug. 2 through 20.

Andrew County Museum featured in VisitMo Travel Club

By Jess • April 12, 2011 • PressComment

Andrew County Museum appeared in a VisitMo Travel Club email about family fun in Missouri. A photo of the orientation area of the museum appeared in the email next to a link to the article “Smart Moves—Missouri Makes Learning Fun.” The article proclaimed:

History comes to life at the Andrew County Museum in Savannah. Explore “A Rural Way of Life,” an exhibit illustrating the county’s rich history from the past two centuries. Visitors to the museum learn about rural life on family farms and in small towns, with displays showing how life has changed through the years: stop in the general store; visit a farmhouse kitchen; watch a silent movie, projected against the side of a brick building, as it would have been done in the early 1900s.

Other Missouri attractions featured in the article include grouped the museum with The Magic House in KirkwoodKaleidoscope in Kansas City, and Country Caboose in Joplin. VisitMo Travel Club is a great way to find out about fun day trips in and around Missouri. To sign up, visit VisitMo.com.
